Hi All,
First post so hope I do it right ! I am restoring a grp Avenger 21 ex race boat and need some advice please as I think I may have messed up, firstly I glued two 25mm pieces of marine ply together with Epoxy resin and then used the left over epoxy to seal the rest of the transom, once fitted in the boat I was going to tab and glass in matting with polyester resin on the rear of transom but I read on this very informative site that you should not use poly with epoxy is this correct if so should I sand back the ply and start again ??? I will try to attach some pics , thanks in advance.

Welcome devil's choice,
If all you did was apply a layer of epoxy and you can sand it pretty much completely off and leave the plywood "virgin" again, it should be no problem to then proceed with poly...

You also could just tab it in with epoxy and be done with it.

Re: Transom problem ! next question

Thanks for advice so far, I managed to get all the epoxy resin off before bonding the new transom in and laying up the csm
with polyester resin, now I need to know if I should use gelcoat to finish off ? do I apply it straight on top of the csm until I get the required depth and the sand and buff up afterwards ? I am repainting the hull once finished so not too bothered about colour match at this stage, I will try to upload a picture, thanks in advance

You cut the transom out of the back of the boat:

All those chines along the bottom of the hull will make tabbing the hull bottom to the new transom skin a challenge.

Why would you want to use gelcoat if you are going to be painting the boat? It's usually gelcoat or paint......

Based on the pix I reposted, it doesn't appear to be ready for gelcoat or paint just yet..........

Yo man, you can't be posting a couple of small pics of an ex race boat without telling us a little more about it and some history. Looks like a cool, cool project.

ok so I have made a little more progress on the transom at last , looking forward to flipping hull over so I can get it filled and rubbed down before re gelcoating, could anyone tell me how much gelcoat I would need for a 21 boat ? looking to spray it on , thanks in advanceDSCN0281.jpg

This doesn't look like you've tabbed the exterior hull to the new transom yet:

In fact what is the shiny black on the transom now & the bright white along the former transom's lip?

I'm not following the project progress from where it was (transom cut out) to where you're describing you're going next:
Boat flip, fill & gel-coat....

No longer painting? Only re-gel? Or as I noted before, gel 1st then paint?
