I have read a bunch of threads and cannot find the info I am looking for. This is my first boat restore...by accident! Thought carpet was all i needed..ha. Ok, the transom is out and I am working on the new one using treated plywood and I think I understand that it needs resin and fiberglass to join the 2 pieces. It also needs resin on the side inside the boat and then will be glassed to the interior of the boat. If I have read or assumed anythign worn please correct me. My main question is when I set the new transom in does it just rest against the outer fiberglassed wall or how do you attach it with resin. Also, do i need to run a skim layer of that peanut butter product below the transom like the stringers?

Thanks,
Dave

Welcome to iboats.com. This is the right place to get info. Regarding your question about attaching the new transom to the old fiberglass skin, the traditional method has been to put a layer of mat/resin on the transom skin, then a layer of resin on the transom, then put it in place. The transom wood needs to be clamped to the transom skin. An easy way of doing this is to put a few scrap pieces of ply up against the outside of the transom, and run utility screws right through to the transom wood pulling everthing together. It helps to drill holes in the outside ply so the screws are not biting into it, just passing through it and biting the transom wood. After you remove the outside screws and ply, fill the holes with marine tex epoxy.

How about some pics?

Re: Transom Question

I will add pictures tonight! Thanks for the info....wouldn't running screws into the new transom make it vulnerable to water or rot with holes in it from the screws?

Thats why the holes are filled with marine tex epoxy. It will keep the water out.

Re: Transom Question

Thanks Mark...any particular type of glass to use between the transom and the fiberglass skin? Also, same question for the new inner skin...what kind and how many layers? Thanks in advance for your help.
