I am in the process of replacing my transom on a 20' Thompson. While looking for a local place that sells marine ply, I came across Plytanium plywood. Has anyone used this before?
I looks like georgia pacific makes this ply and it can be used in outdoor applications. It is described as a AC finish.

Re: transom rebuild material

Most of use are using a good exterior grade plywood coated in epoxy. No real need then for marine plywood once it is coated with a good resin.

First I have heard of Plytanium, how does it price out?

Locally the "marine" ply that was to be had was spendy and bottom of the quallity list for "marine".

I split the difference and went with MDO ply (sign board). Fewer voids than "exterior" and much cheaper than "marine".

Like stated above most seem to use exterior 7ply 3/4'' coated with epoxy
or glassed. I didn't know about MDO until recently but thats a better
grade wood, you'll probably want to sand off the paper before coating it though. If you can find marine grade locally especially the arsenic treated
ply I'd use that. I would have but it's not available and I'm not paying $150/
sheet for a special order. P.S. I read Chriscraft once used MDO as planks above the waterline on some of their boats.

It appears that Plytanium is just GP's brand name for its exterior grade plywood. A lot of people have used exterior plywood for transom replacements and I'm sure that brand would work as well as any other. According to the website, it is available at the big box hardware stores around here.

Re: transom rebuild material

Plytanium where I am is advertised as floor underlayment. I used some in my aborted from-scratch build.

It's very nice stuff, AC is right, and it has very few voids. It's basically a high quality baltic birch plywood.

I personally am also using Arauco plywood. This is a plantation grown wood from south america that's also typically low void, has nice sanded sides, and is a bit cheaper than plytanium. Some folks have complained that the quality isn't good where they are, or that from batch to batch quality is uneven, but I haven't seen that.

Certainly it's not as nice as marine ply, but for what you pay for marine ply, that stuff had better be perfect.

I'm going to use Arauco for my transom (happening soon) unless I get an urge to spend money on divinycell. Might save a little weight, and definitely won't rot, but it's $300 a sheet.
