Transom Relief holes / water outlet exhaust question for Alpha One Gen II stern drive

Dumb question I suppose. This is my first alpha one genII - on a 1996 4.3LX. My previous boat had an old 2 stroke outboard and I was used to all the water and exhaust going through the prop. Can someone explain the normal path for water and exhaust on an Alpha One Gen 2 stern drive- circa 1995? I was running on the muffs and I saw water pouring out of the transom. I shut down and raised the stern drive up- and I saw there were two 3/4" or so diameter holes, one on each corner/side of the transom. I'm assuming the water was coming out of those holes and it was supposed to, but I wanted to make sure. I have no leaks on the inside of the boat. I was nervous because I assumed that all the cooling water is supposed to come out thru the prop.

Those are called idle relief ports , my understanding is so the exhaust has less back pressure at idle, if it all went out the prop it would be deeper under water at idle and have more back pressure.
