transom removal

Hey guys. I've got to remove my transom. Dont know where to start. Engine and outdrive will be out in a couple days. Do i cut the fiberglass around what i think is the wood? The gelcoat on the outside dont need to be cut out, right? Again thanks for your help

West System puts out some pretty good booklets about working with their materials, and the one called "fiberglass boat repair and maintenance" (#002-550) has a whole section on transom replacement.

DO NOT remove the outer skin of the transom!!!!!!
