well, I have an older center console that I'm working on the transom. It has no cap and has been cut down over the years to accomodate different motors.

When I got it it had tape and resin, which has pulled away from the exposed plywood allowing moisture underneath. The bond between the outer fiberglass and plywood also loosened in a few areas.

I've pulled the tape and resin off and sanded down the plywood edge, most of it looks good, there are a few areas that looked like the fibers were loose, but not rotten.

I've applied the Rot Doctors CPES to the edge and between the outer fiberglass wood core.

Should I lay tape down directly on the wood, then squeegee the resin down multiple times? Or, should I brush a coating of resin, let cure, then lay tape and resin, adding multiple coats.

Just curious what you would do to an exposed edge of transom.

Thanks,
Brian

Re: Transom Repair- Exposed top, No Cap

bmorris1, As long as the wood is dry, I would add the epoxy and cloth in a single step. Use the slow cure hardner with the epoxy so it has a chance to penetrate the wood. Then add several more coats of cloth and resin. I would overlap the new cloth with the old cloth by several inches (grind down the old cloth first)Build up a 3/16" thick layer minimum, sinct this area can take a beating. Also, do not thicken the epoxy for the first few coats. If you need to thicken it for the final coats that's OK.
