I am replacing the wood in my transom and I am being told that I should only use marine wood which I cannot find, to use pressure treated plywood and another person has told me to use a hardwood such as maple and treat it myself. What type of wood should I be using for the transom?

Thanks

Dave

I've used P/T Plywood,+ ACX Plywood.......

No Real reason to use Marine Plywood for what You're doing,.......

I wouldn't use Hardwood either..........

Hi Bondo,

I did purchase a sheet of PT, but was told that the chemicals in PT react with aluminum. They also told me that when I glue the two sheets together, the glue won't hold well with PT.
All I know is that I never want to have to replace the transom again.

Which Sylvan boat are you fixing? Does it have the wood part of the transom completely enclosed?

No, it is open on the one side,. It's an 18' run about. Once everything is back together, you cannot see it. It's just that I have had so many differant suggestions on what to use or what not to use for the replacement plywood.

Ayuh,......... I've heard that Too............

But,........
In 1999, I rebuild My Starcraft Islander 221, using P/T Plywood for the Floors,+ Transom......
I laminated the 3 Transom sheets together with Resorsinal,+ sealed it with Boiled Lynseed Oil.........
And it's Still in the same condition as the day I installed it.......
The Floor, I installed at the same time,+ sealed with Epoxy the following year.......
Other than a coat of Rustolium Grey paint,(to block the UV light).....
I've done Nothng to it either........
