The original wood transom on my small aluminum boat has rotted and I need to make a replacement. What is the best type of wood to make the replacement out of?

I have noticed several boats which have two pieces of 3/4" treated plywood glued together. Is this advisable?

Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Transom Repair - Material Question

Never use treated wood on an aluminum boat unless it's the CCA kind and it's hard to find. Normal Exterior Grade Plywood (Arauco is a good choice) coated with 2 coats of epoxy and then Painted with a good quality Oil Based Paint or Marine Varnish is the best way to build a transom for your boat. Make sure to predrill all holes and coat all fasteners and holes with epoxy and it will last for decades.
