Transom repair to 1970 Winner fiberglass boat

Hello. From what I've been reading there is a wealth of knowledge out there I'd like to tap into. I have a 1970 Winner boat in need of transom repair. Is it possible to remove the top half of the boat from the bottom to allow easier transom repair? Doing this seems feasible (looks like drill out a wack load of rivets and remove some fiberglass overlap in the inside) as, directly in front of the outboard motor is a cavity (part of the upper half of the boat) that creates getting to the inside of the transom almost impossible. If removing the wood from inside of the transom can't be done, are there any other options to reinforce it? I will appreciate any feedback.

hi.......welcome to iboats.

yes...the proper way to replace a transom is to pull the cap.

the rub rail has an insert.....after that is removed.....there is a boat load of rivets as you saw.
drill them all out, and then the cap comes off.

WARNING. there are two types of hull cap joints.....the most common is the shoe box joint.
the other is a flange joint......the flange joint is very difficult to re fit, and is usually glassed in from behind.
very few boats used the flange joint, and the molds of these were quickly scrapped....if you discover that you have a flange joint. you are best off to cut the back portion of the cap off. and leave most of it on the boat......the cuts are usually 12 inches form the transom up the top of the gunwhales.

after the cap is removed......transom is easily accessible.
you will also need to remove a portion of the deck

Thanks for the feedback oops. Not sure which type of cap I have, but from these pictures I'm thinking it's the flange style. Any thoughts?

No that looks standard to me. Drill those rivets out and de-cap-itate that thing! Welcome to the forum.

Update on the transom repair. Have some pics of the rear portion of the cap removed to allow access to the transom. Have all the (most of) wood removed and can see the damage to the transom. The outside of the transom needs some minor repair. Should I repair the outside first before tackling the transom or complete the outside after the transom is in and bonded? Another issue is the steering cable which is seized. I will order a new one, except I'm not completely sure which style it is. My Seloc manual says it is a 'directional' style vs. a rotary. However the Teleflex website shows a rack rotary system which looks close to mine. Anyone know which would be a replacement? Will have some pics of the steering cable shortly.

Add a layer or two of 1708 and matt (matt first) at the damaged part of the hull on the inside and then complete the transom installation. You'll need to do some grinding and fairing on the outside after the fact. This is why I wanted you to beef up the inside a bit while it's easy to get too.


I'm with EZ on the steering, just replace it all....not that expensive.

Welcome to iBoats!

CW is Spot ON about your Transom. You need to buy a Couple of Gallons of Acetone and give EVERYTHING on the inside a GOOD cleaning! Then using a RO sander of a 4 1/2" Grinder with 60 grit Sanding Discs grind down the hull at the bottom of the "V" and as CW says lay in a couple of layer of 1708 Biaxial Cloth over the suspect area to "BEEF" it up. then Install your transom. I have included a drawing on how to fabricate your transom and install it. As far as your steering I agreee it should probably be replaced but an old trick I learned for TRYING to free them up is this. Fabricate a large funnel out of paper and plastic around the cable end, hang it from the rafters, mix up som power steering fluid and mineral spirits and pour it into the funnel and let it sit over nite. That concoction will somtime seep down into the sheath and free everything lubriate it. But again it should probably be replaced.

Have a pic of the steering ***'y, as well I posted pics of the ends of the cable yesterday. Was hoping somone would know what style this is (rotary, rack, rack and pinion). Was able to grind the edges of the fiberglass off of the existing stuff, at least until the grinder went at me. Couple bandages later and now I'm typin'.

Steering cable ordered. Did some quick checks on the trim pump/motor. Solenoids are clicking, but nothing to the motor. Pulled the motor BEFORE checking for continuity on the motor OR taking the motor leads directly to 12V. Disassembled the motor and found the brushes had plenty of wear. However, a small coin like piece of copper fell out during my 'inspection'. Not completely sure what this is, possibly a bushing of some sort? After reassembling the motor still nothing. I'll have to check the windings for problems before I get too carried away. Is there a boating page that includes all necessary rigging needed to keep the boat cops at bay?

you can also google canada boat test......and they have a manual with the requirements....usa is so close to us in laws you will be fine.

as far as the motor.....start a thread in the motor forums here......the guys that post are top notch.....not a question they cant answer.....

Howdy. Need some advice concerning the area where the motor mounts to the transom. Should I fix these cracks Before installing the transom plate or After the transom is already installed and glassed? The fiberglass of the transom is only 1/8" thick. I can cut out a section where it is cracked, but the fiberglass would make the transom uneven... Here are some pics of the cracks

Here are some pics Scott, unfortunately I don't have any others that would help, but I can help answer more questions if needed. Also, I think if you search for woodonglass's clamping system, it will help with the transom install. I did have to build an additional clamp as I have a lip on the port and starboard sides of the transom skin that don't allow for a regular clamp to work. I was able to clamp horizontally along the length of the transom after the vertical clamps were in place, by using some spacers to distance the horizontal clamp from the vertical clamps. Hope that explanation is of use. Good luck.
