transom repair

hey guys
been reading posts and could not find an answer to my question. can i use a piece of 2x12 to repair my rotted transom or should i use plywood like it originally had? it was set up with ply,glass,ply. the boat is a sunbird swl 150 (built like a whaler) thanks

2 layers of 3/4" exterior plywood laminated (glued) together and a layer of fiberglass cloth. Plywood is stronger since the wood grains in the layers run in opposite directions.

Plus your transom is usually taller than 11 1/4" anyways oh and the garbage they call lumber these days a straight 2X12 is non existant.

okay thanks for the info thats my project for the weekend. i have most of the soaked foam removed as well as the rotten transom. looks bad but really its not to hard.
