My transon is (2) 3/4" plys, just when I thought that I had this all figured out, a boat builder threw a wrench in on me. His words of wisdom were that marine plywood is treated with some sort of an oil therefore any coatings will not adhere well. His direction is a good grade of ACX coated with epoxy resin thinned with Acetone is better than marine. Everything that I have heard up till now was marine was the best choice and I never heard of any problems with adhesion.

I'm all about not spending $75 a sheet if ACX will work or is better. On the otherhand if it's $75 well spent then I'll go for it.

So far I'm hearing seal each sheet completely and then bond them together. This guy even said sprinkle a few grains of sand between the sheets to keep the glue from squeezing out.

 Your thoughts?

3/4" exterior plywood will work fine and yes resins will stick to it. I have never heard that marine grade was oil treated.....new one on me!

UPDATE: I purchased marine plywood and coated it with epoxy resin... it looks better than new! I sure wish I had used epoxy resin instead of polyester resin on the floor, I think the epoxy is far superior.

No sticking problems at all, it worked fantastic! I purchased the epoxy on Ebay, $20 worth glued the plys and coated the entire piece with some left over! The smell of the polyester resin when I made the floor literally drove my neighbors of the back porch! The epoxy was low odor and much longer working time.

Another side benefit of the marine plywood... it is WAY MORE stable. My ACX warped and twisted, I even had to wet one piece and put my trolling motor battery on it to straighten it, the marine is arrow straight and stayed that way!

Yeah there's no doubt marine ply is a superior product. I admit the exterior ply I used for my floor was pretty much sh_t with all the voids in it. I used Arauco ply from Lowes for my transom and it was WAY nicer although I've heard it's a softer wood.
