Re: transom replacement in fiberglass

it wasn't to bad but you won't like the procedure :)

The worst part is at the transom were the splash-well is joined to the top half. The outer layers of glass are joined pretty firmly to the transom, I had to remove the top lip (an angle grinder worked great and I was able to reuse the top piece to minimize the the joint profile) of the fiber glass then use a large chisle and pry bar to gently pop the fiberglass from the rotton transom. Then the rest of the top will be dependent on the shape of your floor, mine was completely rotten so I just cut it out leaving a 2 inch lip around the consoles and front and rear decks, remove the rub rail and about 150 screws holding the top to the bottom and gently split it apart, if your floor is being removed make sure you support the hull or it will deform on you.

I would check the stringers and floor real close, the way AstroGlass assembled the floor and stringers created a couple of channels that allowed water to follow the stringers straight to the transom, with no way for it to drain. I thought my stringers were fine until I took the top off, then I could see the damage.

I'll look... but I am thinking I don't, since it was a one man show I didn't take all the pics I wanted (the better half wasn't real happy with me at that point :) ).

boy do i know what you mean about the better half.
i just bought this boat two weeks ago and i thought it was in great shape. The boat looks better than some new boats but i found out it needs 900 dollars of work on the motor. carbs rebuilt, fuel pump, timeing and some other work . i still have to talk to the motor guy and find out details. I also found out that the lower bolts holding the motor on have been leaking for awhile and now needs a transom. i bought the boat for 3,000 dollars and has a 150 mercy 1988. im not upset about the motor. The boat is another store. i'm looking into doing the transom myself. im a tool and die maker and a woodworker so i think i have the skill but im haveing trouble finding exactly how to step by step repair the transom. im having a glass guy give me a qoute ttoday.

im not a spellin major sorry!

doug

Re: transom replacement in fiberglass

Sounds about like my experience. unfortunately I didn't get pics of that part, but then the floor in mine was gone and I had a chance to just cut away. As you saw on my project you will have to split the two halves to get the transom out. I will try to photo shop a couple of pics to show you where I had to cut the floor and transom, but I won't be able to get to it till this weekend. Remember This is not a quick repair that you can do in a couple of weekends.

Get a manual for the motor and do the rebuild your self, with the guru's here I have found more than enough help and information to do it all.

Re: transom replacement in fiberglass

thats the problem i want to use it this fall and i live in upper illinois its starting to get colder how dangerous is it to use a heater in a garage when fiberglassing so the boat will be ready by spring. im also thinking of just useing the boat with the soft transom by useing some large aluminum plates inside and out. use it that way till it gets to cold to fish. the fiberglass inside and out at the transom area looks like new

If you use epoxy then the heater won't be a problem. as far as the aluminum... I'll defer to someone with more experiance.

Re: transom replacement in fiberglass

Hi there all! I'm new to this site and relatively new to boating as well. I just acquired a 15' fibreglass tri-hull with a questionable transom. It has been repaired with a plate of ?" steel wrapped around the top and descending down both sides for reinforcement. Seeing this I can safely assume that the existing transom has suffered rot or some other form of damage. Currently I have a 50HP Johnson and the boat holds the motor quite well, however, I can see a tiny bit of flex at full throttle and it has been enough to crack the fibreglass well in front of the motor. What type of inexpensive repair can I do here? My thought was to coat the cracked fibreglass with some sort of flexible waterproff compound. Any suggestions?

First suggestion is to not reply to a posting that is 4 years old.

newbie, this thread is several years old and "coldfire" hasn't so much as logged on in over 2 years. I doubt you'll elicit much of a response.
