It seems Saf-t-Mates have been popping up on this forum a lot lately.

I am just finishing mine. I was lucking. My transom is very solid. The stringers and floor were shot though.

You will pay a lot to have someone else do it. It probably doesn't make financial sense...although not much about owning a boat does.

What type and size of engine do you have? How is the condition of the rest of boat?

It may make more sense to find another hull and put your motor on it.

Re: Transom Replacement - Shops in SE MI?

This boat is mainly still around because of sentimental value and because I like old stuff. I just re-powered with 1988 Johnson 60 last fall.

The issue is I had known 10 yrs ago that the transom wood was wet, so last fall I stripped off the inner glass to get a look at the wood. It seemed that the drain plug sleeve had been leaking as this area was most damp and seemed softened. The bizarre thing is that the wood doesnt look rotted, though overall the wood seems entirely too soft. The transom isnt bowed or anything, and the best I can tell, it seems OK, but I simply dont trust that it is.

I replaced floor and stringers in 1997, and rest of boat is in OK shape given that its a 1968. Id like to keep it around, but I dont have confidence in the transom, so I feel like repalcement is the best bet.

If the wood is still all intact and fairly solid you may look at some products like Git rot or on the web for The rot doctor. This is an Epoxy type resin that will soak into the wood and harden. The transom must be dry first. The best bet is replacement.Or also look at Seacast pourable transoms, its a composite material thats 10 times stronger than plywood and will not absorb water.
To have a shop replace it will probably run a grand or more.

I have never used it. However I have seen on different sites, that this is a great product. Check out fiberclassics.com

If you have replace stringers, this should be a job you can handle.
