Transom replacement ?

I am going to tear out my transom today but while researching many of the Transom replacements on this site most have some sort of cap or top, mine does not. It is just a fiberglass, so when I rip my old one out and replace it will I then just place the new wood transom and then fiberglass right over the top and then sand it down and paint it?

I don't have any better pictures then these but that is how the whole transom is without any sort of cap just the fiberglass. Any info you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

David

No ideas at all? There has to be someone out there that has seen this before...

Re: Transom replacement ?

So how do I fiberglass the corners so that they don't crack and actually adhere to the surface?

Re: Transom replacement ?

I have read the whole thread and taken notes but the difference is my Transom is in full view with no cap on it as his and most others on this site. I am planning on starting with a smaller mat like 3/4oz to fit the top so hopefully it adheres at a 90 degree angle, then adding in the 1708 for the rest. I am not sure if that will even work and also the areas that go to the side as shown in the pictures are all cracked because of the angle. I am just looking for some advice.

Re: Transom replacement ?

i think we need to see an overall pic of the transom.....

im willing to bet the transom is just covered in glass and you cant see it...

there has to be an outer shell.....(the hull)....and the transom is inside it....grind off the glass on the inside of the transom....and you will see wood....

as far as making those rounded corners with glass....when you get the new transom in place it will be eveident how to glass it.....(just wrap it)

but again....i think we need a more overall view before we can say if the above is correct

cheers
