so after many months (spread over two years ha) of scrapping, sanding, and swearing i have finally managed to remove my partially rotted transom and have cut the new piece of plywood to the correct shape. I've coated the plywood with boaters resin (with hardener). what is the best method for bonding it to the fiberglass wall of the transom, considering the wall and plywood aren't perfectly milled to each others shape?

70's Chrysler 15' trihaul.

Re: transom replacement

any time you use resin on anything you must also use fiberglass....csm is good for what you are doing.

apply a fresh coat of poly resin...add the csm and remove the air...

coat the new transom woth the same and install the transom....

squish it together how ever you can.....make sure it is squished till the resin oozes out.

around the edge.....use oops super dooper peanut butter.....(see the hull extension thread for the ingrediants)

you also bond the transom in the same fashion.

"tab" the transom in with csm or 1708.

cheers

Re: transom replacement

Also cover the transom side to side with 1708.. it really needs a very strong tie to the rest of the boat... tabs alone may not be good enough. For my own 7 foot wide transom I used 3 layers of 17 ounce fabric, the first one overlapping the sides 6 inches, the next 12 inches, and the next 18.
