Hi all,
Over the weekend, I bit the bullet and bought my first boat (1980 16' Galaxy bowrider). I wanted a bit of a project boat (mainly for the pride of knowing I restored it myself) and found it in Atlanta. I can do all of the glass work mysef, paint it, and replace the floor, but the transom is a concern for me. My transom is "ok" for now, but it will need replacing before the boat sees a lot of water time. I can move my outdrive up and down a bit as well as my platform. What is the average cost to replace the transom? Is there any boat addicts in south Ga that could give me some advice on my "project"?

Less than $100.00. Including plywood for lamination, glue and resin-which you'll have some of.

Do it from the inside out.

I figured the DYI wouldn't be very expensive. My problem is actually doing it myself. What would the $$ be if I took it to a boat shop or paid someone else to replace it?

Looks like me transom issues are more severe than I thought. I tried to do the rot test with a hammer last night, and noticied that both the inside and outside glass has seperated from the wood. Near the centerline where the I/O exits, I can give the inside glass a good push with my hands. Any more thought or advice for me?

Doing it yourself isn't all that difficult, although it will be time consuming. If it's an OMC drive then you'll have an easier time getting the engine back in place when you're done. If it's a MerCruiser or Volvo then you'll have alignment issues to deal with - not hard, but again, time consuming (and you'll need a manual or someone knowledgeable about doing it).

Paying a marina to do it will likely cost more than the boat is worth. As I mentioned - it's time consuming and marinas can rack up the hours (at $50-$100 an hour depending on the shop) in a hurry. Not likely a marina will do it for less than $1500-$2000....

- Scott
