Last weekend I was traveling to my closest lake that came out to be a useless fishing trip, when a small trjody almost occured. I was driving twords the lake going over a small hill, and I heared all kinds of racket going on on the rear of the trailor. I had then noticed my motor was down. Came to find out that my transom saver, motor brace, whatever the crap it is, had broke and my lower unit was just a floppin on the pavement going around 55 mph.... GOD BLESS!!! I was going over a hill and all that happened was my skeg got grinded just a little, but no major damage. Thank god it was a hill, if it were flat ground, my lower unit would have been permanetly damaged.
Anywayz, heres my beef. My transom saver had broke, and I was wondering if I could take this thing to a welding shop and have this thing welded where it broke? I dont know if this things alluminun or not so any tips will help a bunch.

I would replace it, MGR. And don't buy a cheap one. Get the best you can find.

Good luck. :)

Yeah, the one I had is a piece of crap and is older than I am. I would buy one from here, but I need one by 2morrow, maybe wal mart has them.

Maybe the following belongs under stupid human tricks but here goes. I'm driving with the wife and the boat in tow heading to the bay to launch. On a bumpy section of road doing about 30 I suddenly hear this awful glass noise, like bottles hitting each other. Wife looks at me and says "What's that?" Having just passed a house with garage door open (my window is rolled down) I quickly conclude "must have been someone in the garage of that house back there dumping his beer bottles in the recycling bin." About the time I finished that statement I hit another bump and hear the same noise. Stupid me finally pulls over and realize I didn't lock the motor up good and the skeg/prop was hitting the asphalt. That aluminum sounds like glass bottles when its dragging on asphalt. Oh well, other than a little grinding off the skeg and a ruined prop (was going to get a new one anyway) didn't really hurt anything. Since my motor isn't heavy enough for a transom saver (little 55hp) and my transom is really beefy, I use a bungee cord hooked to the locking arm wrapped around the motor so it stays locked.

Grab yourself a magnet. The chances are it'll be too late before you see this post, but if you try to stick a magnet on the transom saver it'll tell you if its steel or not. If its steel, the magnet will stick. If this is the case almost anyone will be able to weld it up for you (providing they have a welder). If the magnet does not stick, it will be either aluminium or stainless steel. both of these can be welded using a MIG or TIG welder, which most welding shops should have on hand. If it's aluminium in colour it will be very light and also be a dull metalic colour, whereas s/s will be bright and heavy.
Andrew
