I have been reading several threads about transom savers. I want to get one but the ones I see when I read the directions most of them say you must have power tilt/trim to use it. What if I dont have power tilt/trim...what are my options...can I still use the traditional transom saver mounted to the trailer and rest the motor on it?

Re: transom saver

you would have to secure it, which you should do anyway, since you don't have the ptt to hold the motor down and keep it from bouncing loose.

Re: transom saver

I used one on my old boat with a 40 hp evenrude and no power tilt/trim. Just made sure and put a tight bunji cord to keep it from bouncing. The 70 hp Johnson I've got now has PTT but I still strap it to the saver just out of habbit.

My T/S said the same thing, for use with power tilt/trim. I just made a removable pin mount on the trailer, for the T/S, and rubber strap the lower unit to the T/S head. Works fine. Just make sure the T/S is secured to the trailer, so it does not fall off while trailering, don't want it falling off....

Re: transom saver

Our first boat (15' Starcraft fiberglass / 65 hp Johnson) didn't have power t/t and we most definitely used a transom saver. All we ever used was the heavy duty rubber bungee cord that came w/ the transom saver, and it made several trips between ME & FL with no problems.

Re: transom saver

on my 2007 no power trim, tiller 40HP Merc (why do they make them without PT????) I use a transom saver with bungies (beware):

1) raise motor high and lock it
2) put trailer side TS on very snug with bungie
3) drop motor down and compress the TS. Bungie the TS to spot that wont allow TS to drop. Lock motor tilt (definitely lock motor otherwise motor will bounch, bungie will stretch...disaster)
4) go!

OK....I don't recommend bungies and should replace my own with solid lockable straps. Bungies have broken twice as I was putting them on. bungies stretch.

PT is a few hundred $$$ extra and some people either can't afford it or don't want to pay for it.

A nylon web ratcheting tiedown would be the way to go.
