I just got a boat and motor and wanted to know If I should get a transom saver? The guy I got it from said to just leave the motor down and it should be fine. Not to dis-credit him but is this ok? Its a 14' v-hull w/ a 1958 18hp Johnson?

-Jay

Re: Transom Saver?

I have never seen a transom saver on a motor that small. If the motor can be trailered down, most larger motors can't, too close to the ground, I don't see a reason for one. What I would do is make sure the motor can't turn while towing ie banging to one side as you take a corner. My 2 cents

Unless the skeg clears flat ground by a foot when the engine is down you need a transom saver. Getting in and out drives and over speed bumps can take your gearcase off.

I have used them on 25hp engines on skiffs.

Re: Transom Saver?

I often wondered about the same thing on my 14' semi V-hull with my 9.9 Mercury on it.

I'd rather trailer with it down because it seems to bounce alot when it's up.

I've just bungied it so it wouldn't turn in the past and it seems stable. I can't remember how much it clears the ground by (it's winter here in St. Louis and I haven't had it out in awhile).

Can't wait for spring...

Down is better than transom saver, transom saver is better than up, so if you can trailer with it down, the way to go. Chief :)

It wouldn't hurt to use a transom saver because with the motor down straight and fastened to keep it from bouncing. It could begin to loosen up your transom and cause it to leak or crack ,I had this happen to my first boat and since using one on my new boat success so far.I know that Cabelas sells a varity of transom savers starting from $25.00 to approx. $43.00 if this any help to ya. ...plmbr
