Preparing to get the boat out this spring and planning to service the transom. Gimbal brg, exhaust/u-joint bellows and associated o-rings/seals etc.
I was looking at my omc manual last night and the only procedure I could find involved removing the pivot housing.
Is that necessary?
I thought I had read that with the cobra drive the transom can be serviced with only the removal of the drive itself.

This is the kit I'm planning to get.
its possible with the housing in place just a tad more difficult but not bad.

Re: Transom service on omc cobra

to remove the pivot housing will require removal of the shift cable and the pivot bolts, not much maint to do on the housing.
unless the housing has a lot of corrosion I usually dont remove them for bellows service.

I have '89 Cobra's. I don't know why they want you to remove the pivot housing.. I change my bellows all the time and grease the U-joints and gimbal bearing every year.. no need to pull the pivot. But, if you do.. it's simple. Theres two hex head pins, one on each side. Remove them, the pull the housing. Note that the water pump hose and the shift cable will be attached.. this is the only B*itch of it. It's hard to get anything on the shift cable it to unscrew it. But again, even looking at the parts your showing above, I dont see a need to take that off.

-David

Liquid Force, Where are you going to get the kit you showed in your original post, and how much will it cost? I have an OMC 1988 Sunbird Corsair with the 4.3ltr V6 engine. I need to pull my drive for preventive maint. That kit looks like what I will need. Thanks! Donwon

Re: Transom service on omc cobra

Hint from the Stuart Hastings Cobra Document:

 The U-joint bellows is not symmetric. If you examine one, you'll see the ribs are really one continuous spiraling rib. It has been deliberately made to have one more rib on one side than the other. Study your bellows, count the ribs on each side, and place the "extra" rib on the bottom. When your sterndrive is raised, the top will be compressed and the bottom will be stretched; you want that "extra" rib on the bottom.

Thanks AJ, That looks exactly like the same picture, cheaper than I thought it would be. Now all I need to do is hunt down the tools to borrow to remove and install the bearing. I intend on building the drive holder that was shown on another topic. Maybe someone knows how to attach a link here to remind everyone about the home built outdrive holder. Someone sells a commercial one, but it looked very easy to replicate from a little plywood and a couple 2 x4's.

Re: Transom service on omc cobra

Howdy,

I'll be doing the same thing this spring on my King Cobra.

I just bought that kit for my King Cobra from Ebasic power.

They seem to be pretty fast with help, shipping etc. I called them after the internet order and they were willing to discuss part numbers, superceded numbers, etc.

I ordered the kit during normal business hours and I got an almost immediate return email detailing the order(auto responder). Shortly after that, I got another email with shipping info that included a UPS tracking number.

Does anyone know what the diameter of the snap-ring is that holds the exhaust bellows on? (I don't have one on mine). Someone added thru-prop exhaust on my Cobra but didn't bother to put the exhaust bellows on.(I have solenoid operated selectable thru-hull exhaust)

I am going to go ahead and add the exhaust bellows since all the other plumbing is there. It's held on with a clamp on the transom side and a snap-ring on the drive side. I'm sure I can get one locally if I know what the diameter is. The kit I ordered comes with new clamps but not the snap-ring that goes inside the ex bellows and Ebasic didn't have it.

Thanks,

Rick

Thanks!

That worked great and I found a dealer close by that will probably be able to get one or will have one in stock.

Regards,

Rick

Re: Transom service on omc cobra

I have found that the 87/88 FORD 460 powered King Cobras are somewhat rare and as such things like manifolds and other things unique to the 7.5L engines are getting scarce. Companies like GLM and other aftermarketers don't seem to be making manifolds anymore for it. I'm thinking that if I ever repower/rebuild I'll probably find a Volvo "take-out" to replace it with. 375-425hp maybe? I'm hearing that the newer Volvo transom mounting is similar to the older OMC's. I suppose it's not practical to try to put a Merc in there.
