I need to put new bellows on my 1985 Mercruiser.
I plan to buy all 3 bellows and clamps, bellows adhesive, outdrive gasket and orings, gimbal bearing.

I plan on an alignment tool also. I have read I can get the gimbal hinge pins out with a 1/2 inch allen wrench,is this right? I figure I can improvise on the bearing housing puller(hopefully it is in so I don't need to pull it),and come up with something to drive the new one in.

Is there anything else special tool wise I will need? Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks

Re: Transom Service Tools and Parts

Someone told me that a square half inch socket extension would work... it didn't. I went ahead and bought the right tool. (They aren't too expensive, and as my wife can tell you, my philosophy of life is "You can never have enough tools." )

Re: Transom Service Tools and Parts

I was not planning on replacing the shift cable. It is as smooth as silk right now,but I hate to take it apart on not do everything necessary.
Do I need a special tool to remove shift cable also??
Thanks

Re: Transom Service Tools and Parts

Spark Chaser. I used a bolt coupler (3/8'I think), to remove the outdrive pivot bolts. Just try a standard bolt head until you get the correct size, then its off the home depot...

I do not know what the alignment tool is used for, but I needed to use some blunt tire irons to push the bellows into position. Also, although the manual called for me to put the drive shaft bellows on the transom, I could not make it work. It was too hard (and I did not have the special tool) to "pull" the bellows onto the outdrive. It was easier to put both bellows on the outdrive, and push it close to the transom and use the tire iron to push on the inside or outside "folds" until they were on properly.
