I have replaced my transom in my boat. I have 2 3/4 in ply bonded together added bigger kickers and used multiple and multiple layers of fb to it and plan on putting a stainless plate on both inside and outside of boat when mounting jack plate. My question is do I need the 2x4 that most transoms have the width of the transom? I didn't think it was necessary with all the extras I have done to it. Now im second guessing myself. Here is a picture. Its almost complete minus the stainless plate.

Re: transom stength question

you are strong enough right now that you dont need a steel plate.

the only reason for a 2x4 there is to strengthen a weak transom......yours isnt weak.

Re: transom stength question

Yeah the 2x4 and the plate are just temporary fixes, so why install them and make your new transom appear shot out?

The jackplate will be more than enough on the outside, I used some Bob's machine backing plates inside. They also sell a bolt kit for mounting your jackplate. I figured why not know that the hardware is good enough for a bigger motor on a bigger jackplate than I have. It comes with bolts, nylock nuts, washers and lock washers.
