I have a late sixties model 18 ft. duraglass tri-hull. I have bonded the new transom onto the hull.It has been pre glassed. Can I tape it in heavy with just some open mesh sandwiched between mat. I know that cloth is stronger but trying to save money. I already have mat and mesh. Also how far should I tape the transom into the hull on outside and inside? I want to do it right. Could use some low budget high quality advice. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: transom suggestions

I forgot to mention the hull part of the transom was removed due to damage. It was not reused. Thanks.

Re: transom suggestions

Low budget and boats doesn't mix.. As for being frugal with materials, yes that is possible.

1st get some materials the cheap way, there are people on eBay that sell scraps of fiberglass materials from the ends of rolls very reasonable. One person I have worked with is: http://stores.ebay.com/Tordoff-Supply

Getting your transom to fit the hull tightly is important. If there are ANY gaps between the hull and transom these need to be filled. Also fillets between the transom and hull sides and bottom do tremendous to transfer the loads. remember that our OB is pushing on this board we call the transom and that board needs to transfer that force to the hull and the stringers.. Some mat and resin between the transom and the hull's outer skin is not going to transfer the loads..

Start reading here and you'll get kind of an idea of what I did, not that I do this all of the time.. http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/imageDetail,p,148,i,3280,00.html

Also, when you say mesh, you're not talking about fiberglass mesh drywall tape are you?

Re: transom suggestions

My new transom is in. The gaps have been filled. The outside has two layers of mat and a layer of woven roving. I will be putting the same on the inside. I also have made gussets for it. Is this enough? Should I add more woven or mat. How far into the gunwhales should I take the glass?I want it to be strong. The boat is a lake boat and wont be used too roughly (little ones on it). I have an 85 hp Evinrude on it. Hope you all have some thoughts. Thanks for the time.

Re: transom suggestions

Sound good so far. You might post some pictures here or on shareaproject.

I made up 8 inch wide pieces of cloth and installed 2 layers accross the transom to the insides of the hull. http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/imageDetail,p,148,i,2873,00.html

If you have roven woving and are really concerned about strength, use it..

also look at how the mechanical loads are transfered from the transom to the rest of the boat. How are your stringers bearing on the transom http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/imageDetail,p,148,i,3313,00.html

How does your floor attach to the transom and how is it transferring loads:

If you 'play engine' and put your shoulder into the transom and push for all you've got, does it flex? We always think that the transom holds the motor up on the boat, but it actually needs to take the 85 hp of push from the OB and transfer that to the entire hull so it moves through the water..

Re: transom suggestions

The transom is now wrapped with two layers woven and one mat on inside. The main stringer is in and tabbed. Im getting ready to install the other two stringers
and some transom gussets. Ill be putting some pics on here soon. I want to say Thanks to everyone for the thoughts. This forum is awesome and I have learned a lot.
