Howdy,

Water through the drive helps cool it. If you're going to switch to a through hull pickup, you need to make some modifications indicated in the Mercruiser manual.

Have a look at the following: http://www.boatfix.com/merc/install/gas/86017211.pdf

I don't think there's a huge advantage with most drives unless you have low flow using an engine driven pump.
(if you want to use an alternate water pickup with an Alpha, you'll need an engine driven raw water pump)

Why do you want to switch?

It's like that already I just boat the boat. It's a bravo 1 drive 1990 ish but Tex I was stuck diving in the water because it sucked in some seaweed. Thinking of switching it back. Any input is good. If I should leave it like that then I will but would have to fab a screen or something for it

My Bravo 1 is through the drive. It works fine. Does it have a seastrainer?

I would think a transom pickup might be more susceptible to picking up floating debris (like seaweed or other "stuff")

A sea strainer would catch the "stuff" but you'd want to watch it closely because once plugged, you overheat the engine quickly
