Transom - Weight Vs. HP

Here’s a newbie question concerning transoms and HP ratings. Are the stated HP ratings stamped on transom have more to do with raw HP or weight? The reason I asked is the fact that a 4-stoke outboard can weigh as much as 100 lbs more than a comparable 2-stroke. Even if the HP ratings are the same does the additional weight put too much stress on the transom?

Your rating plate has a hp rating and a separate weight rating.<br /><br />Would you hesitate to stand on your transom and add the 100# that way?

The weight or a engine does not stress a transon nearly as much as the stress put on it by the torque of the engine--Bob

If you are thinking of a new motor be sure to give all brands and technologies a close look<br />before that final purchase.
