Good day, all.
It was about 2 years ago that I mounted a transducer onto my boat and found water in the transom. This was about 5 years after I'd done a complete restoration on my boat - a Stratos 1850 center console. The water issue was discussed here.

The transom is solid but will need to be replaced at some point down the road. Pulling the cap would be a royal pain so I'm going to have to go the dig it out route. In looking at my rebuild pictures, I saw where I'd left screws to hold the 3 sheets of 3/4" ply together which will certainly kill a chainsaw chain or 2. The one good thing is that it was not marine plywood.

After digging out most of the wood, has anyone used chemicals, lye, etc... to disolve out wood in tight areas?

I am also looking at CarbonBond for the filling substance.

Nothing is in the works right now. This is all preliminary investigation.

I would pull the cap

Not sure when you plan to replace the transom again, but it is too soon for a replaced transom to fail.

You need to figure out whet went wrong with the original job, or I fear you will be doomed to repeat it.

BTW - Wet transoms can last a long time in saltwater. Freshwater rots 'em out. Do you see signs of transom failure?
