can you take the cap off? it seems like its really hard to get at like that. and not sure how easy its going to be to put the new transom back in there.

Re: transom wood removal tips

I may be cruxified for this, but here's how I did it.

First I removed the cap because working folded in half is no fun. Then I removed the rotted wood, which went about halfway up. Then I took a skill saw set to the depth of the transom wood and cut lines into it about 2 inches apart taking care NOT to cut into the glass. Then I seperated the wood from the back of the hull with a sharp wood chisel wedged flat side TOWARD the glass. The wood came out without too much of a fuss. Granted it was a bit time consuming, because I didn't want to compromise the hull in any way. It came out cleanly and the new wood went in without any gaps between it and the hull.

Good luck with it and keep us posted.

Are you doing a Repower with this refit,..??

There's No Way I'd go though the labor of this,+ reinstall a Dead Horse(OMC Stringerdrive)...

Chainsaw, if yer good with one. I used a home made long handled chisel also, made from a cheap wood chisel from harbor freight.

dynamite works good for the transom....

the cap must come off, yer gonna kill yerself cramed in there with a hammer chisel and such...... i only takes a little while and done.....

a grinder with a 7 inch flapper disc and 24 grit resin backed paper will get i out quick after the big chuncks are removed.

read bond-o's post twice.....merc alpha 1s are coming really cheap....and the omc will cost you more later
