Gday all, been reading all the transom problems people have been having and regard myself as in the same "Boat" so to speak. I have an old 23 foot fibre glass boat that the transom appears to have a lot of rot in, but, there are no stress fractures in it nor is there any movement in it. One boatbuilder sugested a transom plate while the other one said they were useless. Any ideas anyone????

Sooner or later you will in fact have to rebuild that transom.A "plate",will work if you are not running it in bad seas, but at one tme or another you will.Don't put it off what you can do today,it just going to cost you more in the long run if you put it off.

I had the same problem with a 20' Sportcraft. I bit the bullet and cut the top off the transom, chainsawed, chiseled, bored, and vacuumed out the old wood and poured in a new one of SeaCast. Also, formed up and poured a couple of extra stringers alongside the existing ones. Wasn't cheap or easy but what a great result in both strength and looks.

Thanks for the info guys, but unfortunaly I dont think we can get Seacast in Australia yet so I will have to bite the bullet and pay a boatbuilder to do the job as I dont have the time or ability to do it with ply..$$$$$ More dollars!!!<br />-----------------------------<br />B.O.A.T Bring On Another Thousand

Check out the seacast web page , you should be able to get Sealcast in Australia, the link is below <br /> http://transomrepair.com/ <br /><br />I called the toll free # 866-716-4820 , they stated it can be shipped to Australia & if so it may be cheaper than to get a repair shop to do it.

Interesting ! I spoke to the good folks at SeaCast and they told me they don't ship to the UK, so what's OZ got that we haven't :p <br /><br />In the end, I had to figure out how they make the stuff and mix up some of my own. Just in the process of capping off the transom top now, so I don;t have any "real world" results yet, but I can smack the transom with a rubber mallet and it sounds like it's made of kryptonite ;)

I called by phone to ask if they could ship to the UK, but this is what they told me later by e-mail:<br /><br />"We will advise as to we are currently working with a company there for there licensing. Check back with us periodically Thank you for your interest sincerely."<br /><br />Perhaps they were still suffering from the effects of Ivan to be bothered giving me a proper answer, but it's a bit late now as I've gone ahead and filled it with my own "special brew" version. Seems pretty similar to their stuff anyhow, I'll report back once I've got the engine hung and in the water.<br /><br />Duncan
