I am mounting a new motor this weekend. It is a 115 Evinrude outboard. I was wondering if it is wise that while the old motor is off and the transom is bare should I get some marine grade plywood and reinforce the area where the bolts go thru the transom?

Without seeing the boat it is difficult to say yes, BUT: on all my boats, the first thing I do is to reinforce the transom to help prevent later problems. I use aluminum angle on the top and a plate on the outside. Plywood is not really a good option with an engine that size.

here are a couple of photos that may help.

Re: transom

hard to say, are we talking glass, alumiunim, normally all you have to do is get some really big washers to spread the load of the bolts, I use 2 1/2'' sraure 3/16'' aluminum from work and haven't had a probelm with bolt pulling.

If your transom is in bad shape it may need replaced and adding wood won't solve your problem, you will be putting a band aid on it.

If the transom moved more than 1/8''-1/4'' wiht the old engine on it you shoudl replace it.

Excellent idea...I like the aluminummplan. The boat is fiberglass and in pretty good shape. I just wanted to do anything that would help while it's already apart. Thank you for your ideas.
