Re: transom

Sometimes it's possible to get an idea by thumping around with the handle end of a screwdriver. Or small hammer. Sort of like checking watermelons.

A power drill and take a few core samples?

If it's an outboard model just grab the lower unit, with the anti lift latch engaged and give her a few good tugs and pushes. If it's weak it will show.

Re: transom

Either remove an engine mounting bolt, or one of the tramsom eyes, and check for rot around there. These spots (any spot where something goes through the transom) are usually the first spots to go. Be sure to seal 'er up good when you replace it, if there is no rot.
Do a search in the Project Boats forum. Lots of information on dealing with rotten transoms.
