Re: transome adhesive

My guess is they used poly. When I removed my cap allot of old pieces of broken up polyester resin fell out. I assume the intention was to bond the transom cap to the transom. They used no filler or cloth of any kind. The actual result was a bunch of hardened resin no bonding anything falling out in the floor.
Just one of many shortcuts the factories love to save money on, I'm sure.

I had a 1960's 16 foot MFG , it was glass hull with wooden cap, nice boat,
they typically used what they had to use and nothing more.

Yes,I would say they did a cheap job from factory,no beddind or fillets on stringers,1 layer of csm on inside of transome,3-4 inch on stringers,in the process of rebuilding now.just asked that question because the adhesive on cap was like a peanut butter and very brittle.came off fairly easy.as for the transom to hull bond it took many many hours to remove the ply,was glued like crazy, however the two plys were not bonded together.looks as if there was just small dabs of glue here and there.

Re: transome adhesive

at least they glued your transom iin spots, mine just had steel screws bondin 2 peices of 3/8 ply together and resin to bond to hull with one layer of csm over that, thats why this site is one of the greatest things since sliced bread, so we do BETTER than the mfg when we get into them through the sharing of info, i wouldnt expect a new boat to last more than 10-15yrs, when i get mine done if it doesnt last 20-25 ill b dissappointed.

Re: transome adhesive

They weren't built to last 50 years.
So the design was never there in the first place.
