My Party Hut?s transom has a drain hole that?s designed w/o use of a plug thus fills with water when cruising. Is there a reason why it designed w/o a plug?

I?m thinking of modifying it by mig welding a piece of aluminum plate so that I can place a plug then drained when placed on a trailer.

Or is the water needed for ballast or what?

Think "maintenance free". If you decide to plug it, and the water splashing around back there fills it while underway, then you'll need to drain it.

I doubt you need the flotation that might be gained when it's plugged/empty. I wouldn't mess with it.

The transom will probably fill with water whether that hole is plugged or not. Therefore, leave it be! There is no need to fix something that isn't broken.

Doesn't that area fill with water when at rest regardless if the hole was plugged?

Reel,
+1 on what they said. ... What you called the transom is more commonly called the engine pod. It's purpose is to support the engine and direct the flow of water coming at the engine. It is not intended to provide flotation.

If you have a livewell on your boat, that engine pod "tub" is where the pump is located.
