Hi all,

Looking for buy a 50-75hp 4 stroke and was wondering if anyone had an experience with transporting such sized engine in a car. I have a Prius hatchback and will have a look at used Honda BF60 this week end, it is a 106kg engine I guess can be handled by 2 people to stick it in the trunk? Any ideas? Any experience to charge? Just want to avoid to hire a van to bring the engine on a stand.

Thanks in advance

Many possibilities here.

Wreck the car.
Wreck your back.
Wreck your motor.
Cut off a finger or two.
Spill oil/gas in car.
Not be able to get the motor out.

Outboards are large and unwieldy.

Borrow a truck, or a smaller vehicle with a small trailer.

Depending on model, and 60 hp could weigh up to 260# - 118 kg and a 75 hp up to 360# -160kg

If you are that big and strong, you probably don't fit in the Prius.

We seem to haul everything in our Prius. That said you'll need help handling that much weight.

My wife filled our Prius hatchback full of wood blocks. That much wood is heavy but it was put into several cardboard boxes.making handling possible.

We usually put down a few layers of cardboard down first to help keep it clean. It'll slide in easier also.

Tie it down.

If you have a Prius, you could haul a 5 HP 2-stroke, or a case of beer, or a single suitcase for one person......but not any 2 of the above.

Sorry.... we travel to Fort Lauderdale yearly and most of the cabs are toyotabombs and more than once out stuff has been wrecked by the cabbie trying to stuff it in the back of his thing.

Buy a Chevy and be happy...

If it fits throw it in. I would be more concerned about the length of it. I also think that would be an excellent motor to re-power a prius with

Hard to beat some of the suggestions above, but I'll try.

Does your Prius have a towing hitch with a removable draw bar? Rig up a stand type arrangement and mount the motor on it. A heavy duty bicycle hauler kind of thing. The steel and fabrication costs might be more than renting a small van.

photo318658.jpg Hi guys, thanks for all your replies, I finally took my chance and it was absolutely easy and still plenty of space for other stuff.

Me me and the guy who sold me the Honda BF60 brought the baby on the engine stand, tilted it so the head lyes on a cover inside the trunk then easy lifted the leg, pushed in and unbolted the stand. The whole think took less than 10 min.

As I pushed the passenger seat forward I could fit in the car the whole Ospray RX24 console with jockey seat. Plus a card box with remotes and other stuff. Just unbelievable how much you can carry in a Prius. Will post a couple more pics tonight.

Looks like the Prius can be an approved car for the middle range outboard transport :joyous:
