We have some stray kittens, one of which is looking like it is getting conjunctivitis in one eye.<br /><br />I don't really have the $50 for the vet right now, but would like clear it up. An animal topical antibiotic that can be used for eyes, should do the trick. <br /><br />Any "farmers" out that that treat their own animals reccomend a fix? I'm sure we will see it again with our other animals.<br /><br />Thanks

Marty,I think I saw something at the pet dept in Walmart to treat that. For the moment I would wipe it completely with a soft tissue with some aloe or visine on it.Charlie

I'm no vet, but one of my daughters is known in her community as "The cat lady". She has anywhere from 20 to 50 cats.<br /><br />What appears to be conjunctivitis can be a symptom of feline anemia, a deadly and very contagious disease.<br /><br />Isolate the kitten from all other cats until you have it nailed down and successfully treated.<br /><br />Good luck.

Re: Treat yuck in stray cat's eye.

I've treated a few strays with a boric acid solution I got from the pharmacy, and, it's been fairly efective. I soak a cotton patch in the solution and gently clean the area around the eye as often as needed. The boric acid solution I have used says not to use in the eve, but it has worked well for me in the past. It may be a good idea to isolate the weeping kitten, but chances are that they are all exposed, and the extra stress will not be good for the infected animal. It wouldn't hurt to treat all the kittens...it will help make them more treatable, + if they are at the beginning stages of the infection , you can knock it in the butt early...before it even shows its ugly face...just a thought :)

OK Marty it cost me a few more slices of my home smoked Turkey but I got it out of her :D <br />She said the local pet store would have this. Petsmart etc Darn forgot add that these chains have Vets in the back of the store where you can buy these products<br /><br /><br />I know this isn't home spun but it's the best I could do.<br /><br />Oticlens eye drops 3 times a day (around $10.00)<br />eye cream 3 times a day (forgot to ask price)<br />warm wet T-shirt 3 times a day<br /><br />Step one: Put a few eye drops (2-4) in the kits eyes.<br /><br />Step two: Wipe out eyes with warm wet T shirt to get matting and any left over eye cream out.<br /><br />Step three: Apply eye cream<br /><br />She also said that the vets when your buying the products usually don't mind answering any questions you might have like things to look for etc.<br /><br />Now Marty you do realize that each cat comes with 20 fish hook sharp claws and a mouth full of needle sharp fangs! If you make it through step three and still have enough fingers left to type<br />with you must tell us the story ;) <br /><br />Seriously it's a kind thing your doing. Best of luck to you and the kits.

Marty...if you heal these kittens, you will have loyal friends for life, they will hunt down mice and rats and bring them to you, as you will be their master... :D

This may seem insensitive, but you can cure it with salt, Yep, just plain old table salt. It will cure pink eye also.<br /><br />Ok, so Im cruel.

Now, when that kitten gets pezzed off at you for messing around with it's eye, those 20 claws quickly seem to multiply in number. Trust me, any time you do anything to a cat that it doesn't want done to it (cat's best interest or not), you are in for a memorable experience. A suggestion that our vet gave us, when we had to spray our cat with flea spray, is to hold the cat by the scruff of the neck. This freezes them to some extent.

If you wrap them in a large thick towel when you treat them you won't need to worry about claws...and the kittens won't need to be bounced off the wall...just a thought :)

Thanks for the great tips, everybody! The brains of the universe reside at this forum.<br /><br />I did find some Terramycin eye creme at Tractor Supply, for $9.95. Man I love that store!<br /><br />"Farm livin' is the life for me" <br /><br /> -Oliver Douglas - Green Acres

Re: Treat yuck in stray cat's eye.

I recognize some of you guys from the boating forum, so I will say this with a certain degree of affection, but some of these ideas are downright friggin' barbaric. In line with some of these, I'd like to add the use of a soldering iron. That ought to cure it.<br /> All kidding aside, the boric acid idea, in the right concentration, is not a bad ocular eyewash. The Terramycin however, a tetracycline, would be a good empirical choice, as this problem could be bacterial in nature, which may respond to tetracycline, and it may be chlamydial in nature, which may also respond to the tetracycline. If it is one of the viral causes, the anti viral ocular medications may be more expensive than a trip to the vet.<br /> Use the Terramycin three tines a day for at least ten days. Oh, by the way, I'm a currently practicing veterinarian, and have been for the past twenty-two years. Good luck...to you and that cat!

Re: Treat yuck in stray cat's eye.

It seems to be getting worse, with pus draining out of some big-word opening, only my wife, who was the queen of college anatomy, could pronounce. <br /><br />I will take it to see the pros tomorrow.<br /><br />Besides, I'm a little squeamish aroundpus-draining
