Treated Trailer Wood Question.

Update ... see below!

I've decided to replace the side boards that fit behind my fenders since they are old and coming apart. So, I went tonight to get some treated plywood and had it ripped lengthwise so I have 2 - 2' X 8' pieces.

Here is my problem.

Can I apply outdoor carpet glue to a piece of treated plywood while it is still wet? The wood I got tonight was damp to the touch, and it is from the treatment since I bought it from Lowe's Indoor Lumber Yard. I need to get the side boards back on tomorrow since I am going to the water on Saturday, and the drying time for the glue is 24 hours. I'd like to glue it tonight!

Any suggestions?

Well, if you really want to get it done now I'd use a hair dryer or keorsene bullet heater to dry the ply wood out (don't burn your house down). Also, read the directions on your glue carefully, maybe it doesn't matter if it is wet.

Man o' Man!

I read the directions and it said not to use it on asphalt roofing or treated wood! :p

Does anyone have any better suggestions for a good adhesive for adhering outdoor carpet to treated wood?

That'll teach me to be rushed, and not look at the directions first.

I used staples and some adhesive that came in an aerosol can (like a can of spray paint) to attach the carpet when I made new bunks with pressure treated 2x6's. I would let it dry out if it got wet though or else the glue might not stick so well. They have held up fine for the first season.

i would have use a 2x6 non treated, you need 3 coat of oil base paint on it before you cover it. treated is to keep insects out. not to keep it from rotting. wet, dry, carpet holding water, treated ply is going to dilaminate.

I used treated plywood on my fenders and I used liquid contact cement like what is used to glue Formica counter top material. Just roll it on, let it flash, lay carpet (also contact cemented) on plywood, just make sure its placed on correctly cause you won't be able to move it once it contacts the coated plywood surface. Staple with stainless steel staples, wrapping edges of carpet around edges to back surface of plywood. Mine have been submerged numerous times this past summer and they are holding up very well, with no signs of loosening problems.

I simply used SS staples and my trusty staple gun to recover my trailer bunks this past season. So far though, I've only dunked my trailer two times since then but everything is still attached...

I added a picture upload for you to visualize the way my fender carpet looks like.

Just use Subfloor Adhesive GE7707 I believe. However I would wait until I the ply had cured. Sit it outside for a few days

Ideally, you should treat the cut end too. The treating usually doesn't penetrate that far into the wood. If you leave one edge unprotected, it may delaminate fairly quickly. They sell the treatment in quarts or you could just apply water repellant like used on decks.

I have treated plywood on my pool deck (15x40 feet of it!) that the previous owner built. It is covered with carpet. The deck is now 9 years old. There is no sign of any delamination whatsoever. I live in western New York. The snow is brutal and we also get plenty of rain. 10 months a year, the deck is wet. I don't think delamination is that big of a problem with it.

What about using Gorilla Glue. That stuff sticks to anything, but it's kinda expensive.

The adhesion of Gorilla glue is even suppose to be triggered somewhat by moisture or dampness. At least that's what they claim.

It's also suppose to be waterproof.

I used it on my bunks to secure the carpet on the top side while I secured the bottom side with the galvanized nails.

Seeing as how someone else built it, perhaps they went to the trouble of treating the cut ends.

Tack it on for now and wait until it dries (6 weeks for treated wood) give it 2 coats of wood sealer and after that dries (read can) glue it on.
