I might be way off my rocker on this one, but I was thinking of doing some spring cleanup work on the boat this weekend and am planning on oiling up the Teak, I know there's a ton of Teak treatments out there, but for the budget minded, isn't there a cheaper way?

in one thread, someone suggested using Vegetable oil on it or Linseed oil, then along comes my brother with his trusty can of WD-40, telling me that WD stands for Water Displacement, and hands me a can and said, here's what you want to use.

so, what works, and what don't?

I just use good old teak oil that you can get at Home Depot. Mine was in bad shape so I removed it, sanded it all smooth and let it sit overnight before soaking it with the oil. Came out looking like new.

Teak oil is cheaper than WD-40, which is a fish oil based lubricant, depending on where you buy.

Use either teak oil or spar varnish.

i recently did my swim platform, it was bad. used 2 part cleaner (cleaner/brightener) kit and then teak oil. looks great. pretty cheap, real easy.

even teak cleaner is just a mild acid, oxallic maybe/maybe not, i can't remember exactly.

Re: treating Teak

Been using teak oil for years. Just finished today using Cetol. Kinda Like a stain or varnish...won't crack. The key was to sand the teak as smooth as a baby's butt. Then 3 coats of Cetol. It looks AWESOME. Supposed to last all year. My 85 Celeb has a lot of teak and I hate having to oil it every week to stay looking good.
