in order to paint the gellcoat....youve got to prep the surface by light sanding..........if you light sand........you may as well just polish the gellcoat....your allerady half done.....you can bring back the shine in a snap......see hull extension in progress....it is covering the gellcoat polishing right now.......

but if you dont like the color of your boat............

I don"t mind the color but the Gel coat is so far gone that there are bare areas that go down to the sealer black coat. And I think the boat will look good Black.

there is no ...."sealer black coat" on a boat.....your at bare fiberglass......there are boat paints called awl grip and emmeron....that are tough as nails........i just dont know how good tremclad would hold.

but repairing gell coat is easy......its just like a really thick....strong...sandable paint that lasts 50 years......

Is there a special gun or booth required to spray a gel-coat?

I am very experienced in automotive painting and used to have a bodyshop. I've only ever painted cars in Enamel, urethane or base/clear. I have sprayed tremclad and it sprays really nice.

Looking for the cheapest way to get a couple years out of this project. Just need this to tide me over for two summers till my travel trailer/truck is paid off.

Thank-you for all your replies. I did go ahead and just paint the top of the boat with tremclad last summer. I polished the bottom of the hull at the same time. This was early summer before I attempted to take it out. The Tremclad looks awesome still but, the polished gelcoat is all faded again and now looks worse. This is a solid K&C 14ft, it would actually be a shame to get rid of her. I have a engine that runs but, needs attention. I have found out that I can base/clear the boat in a custom color but, is it worth it???? I may be willing to get a new motor but, by the looks of the prices for motor vs, a new boat I might lean towards a newer boat possibly with an inboard in the niegbourhood of a 18-20ft
