Tri-hull almost stands straight up on WOT.

So we splashed out newly restored boat and it went great. At WOT the thing darn near stands straight up like a drag car. Is this just a characteristic of a tri-hull or is there something we can do to get it to plane out faster.

Is trim all the way inf you have trim on that vintage? Can you shift weight to the front of the boat?

All we have is the trim cylinders that puts the drive up and down. As far as I know that and the little skeg behind the prop is it. No other adjustment. as far as weight we have some stuff in the bow but the batteries and the gas tank wont fit up front. Is it safe to assume maybe aftermarket trim tabs would be the only way to go?
Something like this?

Seem to get good reviews, and won't break the bank

I am a Smart Tab fan, I have them and they are great. If you are going that route why not get them here,

http://www.iboats.com/Boat-Parts-Ac...hed.1--submit.Search--submit.x.51--submit.y.7

You will save some money and help keep this great board alive.

The trim I was referring to is the cylinders for the drive, the drive should be all the way down when taking off. I sounds like you are stern heavy which will cause what you describe. If you cannot get more weight forward then tabs may be the way to resolve this.

Are you saying WOT , before planing speed? Like getting out of the hole?

or While at planing speed, RPMs all the way up?

First one is my guess, but can you confirm what you are saying?

You just have to practice with your tilt/trim switch. Start w/ it up mid way and as you take off drop it down some until it feels comfortable and you can see well.

Ahh,

Sounds like you are a touch heavy in the stern. Have you tried getting up on plane with the other guys way up front? _ that may be a good way to tell.

Our old 69 Johnson Reveler tri-hull would stand up pretty considerably too until she got out of the hole. Strong 155 V-6 I/0, batteries in back , fuel tank up front, ( she was/ is a closed bow) We put a fin on the outdrive, and it kinda helped. I would have put tabs on if I knew about them at the time....

In the OP's case, he wants to start with the trim all the way in/down. As he passes the 'hump' (bow high) and starts to come up on plane (bow comes down), he can begin throttling back and trimming the motor up/out.

To the OP- you are pushing the throttle all the way to the stop when you take off from idle speed or a dead stop, right? From your description I think you are...

If you baby it, you'll stay bow high for what seems forever. You need to launch that puppy out of the water.

Lost cause was driving and he tried it both ways, Buried the throttle and babied it. Like I said it was somewhat choppy so who knows. It seemed like forever both times tho.

My parents have a 74 19' Sea Ray 302 mercuzer I/O if you baby it you cant see, but if you romp on the throtle it planes out fine.

I think its just the nature of the tri. my deep v doesnt do that.

make sure you have the right prop, and is in good shape.

Ok the trim if im understanding you guys is the up and down of the drive via the trim cylinders. If so, it is all the way down or as far forward as it will go.

yes start out all the way down. If its not it will stand up even more. After u get some speed up then trim it up a little at a time to achive the ride that you want.

Ok how about a diff question. The steering has about an inch or more of play. Makes it so you over correct everything. The helm, wheel and cable are all new. There is a plastic bushing on the linkage at the rear and the play seems to be there. What can we use to take up the play?

Also could anyone tell us the proper way to "Align" the boat? Thats the ebst way I can explain it. But basically drive straight with the wheel straight. Do you have to adjust the shark fin dealy behind the prop? What is that thing called? Thanks guys.

Please DO NOT follow this advice. Do the exact opposite. Trim the engine all the way down/in, then throttle hard to get the boat up on plane, then start to trim up/out once it's overcome the bow wake and gotten on plane and throttle down slowly to desired speed. If this doesn't solve the issue, you're likely gonna need some tabs.

I am not familiar with the steering but you may find that when you get the play out of the steering that it will go straight when wheel is in straight position. I would try to get the bushing or the piece of linkage with the bushing in it to fix the steering before you try anything else, what you do now my have to be redone after steering is fixed. It may be that the fin could be causing the problem also.
