Hey Kidd

It might be with a big motor on there. Lot of weight in the back. Are you trimming the motor in when you take off? Might try putting a hydrofoil on there and see how it does. Moving more weight up forward can help, too. The best solution would be "Smart Tabs".....

Smart Tabs

I'm not familiar with that boat, but I'd guess you're way overpowered. It's the weight at the stern that's causing you to have such a bow rise.

I do hope your transom is in better shape than most fiberglas tri-hulls of that vintage. If not, you may well end up with that Merc on the bottom and the boat barely floating from its flotation foam.

Re: Tri hull take off

Not sure of the size boat in discussion, but had a friend with a 15' MFG tri-hull with 90hp Merc inline 6 cyl. By the end of one season, the transom was visiably cracking. If this is as over powered as thought, I expect you will know soon enough how strong it is!

Otherwise, if transom is stong enough, smart tabs should help the bow rise. Send an email to John at Nauticus. I don't recall seeing post with specific use on tri-hulls, but John will let you know.

Re: Tri hull take off

It's also possible the motor is putting a hook in the hull on acceleration. As was pointed out, many 30-year old glass boats aren't in the best of shape under the glass. If things are at all on the weak side the motor's stresses on the transom can be warping the entire bottom. That can make all sorts of funny things happen to the planing characteristics...
- Scott

Re: Tri hull take off

Ive had it on the lake about 8 times and had numerous people(mechanics) look at it and they all say the boat is in the best shape of any boats they seen that old. No cracks no rot the transom surprisingly looks as if i just put it in a year ago. I know its hard to discribe but i have yet to see a boat from the 70's this nice of shape! i mean it has dry rot on the seats but i put a new floor in last year and under the floor looked like a new boat!! it was always garage kept and WELL maintained i personally knew the original owner and he was a boat FREAK!! ive had all kinds of people comment on the shape of the boat!!!

Re: Tri hull take off

Bow rise on take-off happens - but shouldn't take long to climb out of the hole unless it's underpowered, in which case a hydrofoil would help. But that doesn't seem likely. ;)

A hull deflection that raises the bow...interesting idea.... I agree with other comments - weight & balance is probably the first thing to look at.

I'd tweak my setup before investing in tabs or hydrofoils - post the question in the "Propeller" forum - get some "expert" opinions about motor height, setback, props, etc.

Sounds like a totally fun boat - got any pics?

So, what size boat is it and why did you put a new floor in it if it was good???
