Trying to find TDC on my 1986 bayliner aq131a. Long story short as I was checking the distributor rotor 2 of the plugs came off and I don't know the order. I read that you can quickly hit the ignition with a finger over the first cylinder with the spark plug out to find TDC. I was then going to look at the rotor to find the 1st spot and work my way around clockwise 1 - 3 - 4 - 2.

I had the distributor cap completely unplugged and tried this and i heard a ratchety sound. I only held the ignition key open for about 1 second. Realized I should probably try again with the distributor cap back on and now NOTHING happens. Nothing tries to turn over, no noise, nada. Did I kill my coil?

That coil has nothing to do with it turning over, the starter does that.
I would check all the fuses first.
