02 Merc 115 2+2 spark problems on cyl 1 and 2.

The manual states(but doesn't show) the trigger is rotated by mechanical linkage to advance timing. Can someone help me with how the mechanical linkage is connected. Visible connection to the idle timing adjustment screw, but how does it "rotate" at the flywheel.

thanks, mark

Re: trigger linkage?

The trigger sets on the upper main cap and is held there by the stator, the trigger is allowed to rotate back and forth to advance or retard the timing, with is done by a link rod that is attached to the top end of the advance arm. If need be you can have someone advance and retard the throttle with the key OFF and see how it works--Bob

Re: trigger linkage?

Thanks Laddies. Makes sense now. Have been troubleshooting the no-spark on 1 and 2 and trying to learn at the same time how all this works together. It used to start and sputter, then die. AFter rebuilding the fuel pump, it won't start at all. Guess I could have burned something up while cranking the crap out of it?

Re: trigger linkage?

Thanks Bob. While working on starter issues, sparks flew from WD40 I had lubed the bendix with. so am thinking I might have fried the stator during this. Would lack of spark on the #1 and #2 cyl indicate the low speed windings are bad? I have done some resistance checks on the stator and CDMs, per the manual and swapped CDM modules around to see if that made some difference, but it didn't.
mark

Re: trigger linkage?

Mark, I am not real familier with the CDM ignition system, up here in the sticks it takes awhile before we have to service the newer engines, so far I have not had to repair a CDM system so I'm not alot of help and I don't think I want to become a guesser like some of the posters--Bob

Re: trigger linkage?

You've been very helpful Bob. I am really starting to think it's the stator windings and will test again, then pull the flywheel for a visual check. If something comes up that you can pass along I would greatly appreciate it. thanks again....mark

Re: trigger linkage?

Mark, according to the rapair manual(you can download one at www.rapair.com) disconnect the blk/yellow kill wire and ck for spark, next disconnect the 2 alternator wires(yellow) to ck the rectifier and if still no spark disconnect the CDM modules one at a time to see if one of them is shorted. Hope this helps if it don't let me know and I will ck with a buddy that works on newer engines in Norfolk Va--Bob

Re: trigger linkage?

Well Bob. I am tempted to drive up to Michigan and give you a big ol' hug. I clamped the timing light, and disconnected #4 CDM and got my spark back. Reconnected and lost it. did that about 5 times to verify. Then did the resistance check per my Clymer manual and sure enough the thing is shorted between 2 of the terminals!! I'm thinking the capacitor in it fried? The others check out fine, I thought I had checked them before, but guess I missed a reading or something. I'll get a new CDM and let you know if that was my only problem. The manual says it won't run unless they are all ok, so i'll have to wait until the new comes in. Thanks again, I sure do appreciate you, and this forum.
mark
