Trim and Smart Tabs

Sorry if this has been covered before but I did a lot of searching on it in this forum and a lot of time on their web site and I did not find an answer to my question. Question is, Do Smart Tabs replace the need for the trim up and down button? My trim will go down and the trailer load button works but it will not trim up and the gauge stays pegged all the time. I have ordered the trim limit and sender kit but from what I have read it is a bear to replace. Would I be able to set my motor all the way down and just rely on the Smart Tabs to trim me out properly?

Re: Trim and Smart Tabs

Howdy,

The short answer is no. Smart Tabs are just spring loaded tabs that must be set manually.

They're probably really good for a narrow range of speed after adjustment but you still will need to adjust your engine trim for whatever constant speed you're running.

I have Bennett Tabs on my boat and I can adjust them for any speed I run but it's still a combination of drive angle tab angle and speed.

I still get the fastest planing speed with the tabs all the way up (where they don't touch the water) when the tabs touch the water they cause drag. Drag will slow your top speed.

Trim limiting is absolutely good to have, If you're trim limit system is not working... someone driving your boat could trim it too high (and break something) etc.....you need to fix it..

You would still need to be able to trim your drive to get the prop pushing parallel to the water line for most efficient thrust.
