Trim and tilt where do I check fluid? do I even need to?

Just wondering where you check the trim fluid on an 1989 larson i/0 merc im a new boat owner and want to make sure all my fluids are good to go because some times when I pump my water out of the bildge it looks oil so i want to make sure everything is good to go. Also when I trim up i have to hit the button twice for it to go up is that normal. happends when I go down to
