They work off your battery, engine should NOT be running when you are using tilt, can do alot of nasty stuff to your stern drive.

Jim

 What do you mean by that  As, in the motor should be completely off, or it should not be in gear.

Tilt: Lifts the OB motor up for trailering etc. Lifts the outdrive on a IO type.

Trim: Same as tilt but used under way to adjust the attatude of the boat to gain the best performance for hole-shot and then top speed. Also trim up for shallow water.

Works off the battery. Doesn't matter if motor is running or not. Good luck ;)

Re: Trim and Tilt

What cuzner is referring to is the potential damage that can be caused to an IO if it is tilted beyond the trim range while the engine is running. The u-joints in the outdrive will take a beating if raised too far. The u-joints are engaged regardless of if it in neutral or not..

Of course on an outboard if you raise the motor (specifically the water pickups) out of the water, you can damage your water pump and potentially overheat..
