Hey guys, sure its been asked before. I've just rebuilt the tilt trim assembly in my mid 90's 90hp force. It's working A1 but the nylon bushing around the trim cylinder rod has separated from the cylinder cap. It still works, but over time corrosion will eat the internal o ring groove out and render the unit useless. Anybody point me to a supplier that may have a new trim cylinder cap on their shelves? Nla anywhere I've checked, just hoping someone has one stashed away still in a packet!! Even a mint second hand one would ensure this relic gets many more years of use!!
I think its an old Chrysler part that was used extensively on all 3cylinders.

It's part number 6 from the attached diagram:

Force pn: 817802A 3

Thanx in advance!

Re: trim cylinder cap

that turns out to be a standard size metric wiper. It is made from UV, ozone, oil, water, and salt resistant polyurethane. It resembles black nylon. However, that particular size was not used in anything except 1992-1994 Mercury Force trim systems and none of my vendors have it in stock. They would have to manufacture it to order with a 500 piece minimum. As such, I classify that metric threaded top used on 1992-1994 mercury as non-repairable. If you get a 1981-1991 force tilt ram with inch threaded top and piston then you can rebuild the ram cheaply and easily.

as regards the trim cylinder - there are no parts made from nylon or urethane. If you are sure it is the trim cylinder and it has a nylon retaining ring then the entire cap needs to be replaced. The brass scraper ring rides in a rubber seat and is held in place with a large aluminum retaining ring. If corrosion has gotten behind the ring and is lifting it out, then carefully remove the ring and clean the brass scraper ring. Carefluuy reseat the aluminum slug using a very large socket and mallet. It should have about 1/16" recess. Using a 1/8 or 3/16" flat blade punch create four divots to hold the slug in place. There is no instance of nylon in the trim cylinder.

Thanx for your reply Richard, just wish Id bought the unit you rebuilt and listed on ebay instead of going this way ( we spoke on the phone Im in australia). I now have a rebuilt system with a new housing but a cap that is on its last legs...

The aluminium ring that houses the nylon scraper has seen much better days and is beyond a few punch marks to hold it in place.Previous owner had used a glue to hold it in place, I used some JB weld epoxy when I assembled the system and it worked fine for a few outings but now it rides the rod insetad if stays seated.

Are you sure the early chrysler part isnt interchangable? Ive come across a PN starting with F that was used on chrysler motors and has been superseded by the PN above

Re: trim cylinder cap

the trim cylinder is identical for any year 1974-1994. Parts are fully interchangeable. That is the one with five cover bolts.

The tilt cylinder however went though a few revisions. Tilt caps before 1981 had an overall rubber boot and are not rebuildable. However, the housing uses inch threads and a 1982-1992 tilt cap may be used as replacement. Sometime during 1992 mercury replaced the prestolite ram with a custom made one. the tube fitting is cast into the housing. it can not be repaired and nothing is interchangeable with other years except the piston oring and external oil tubes.

trim cylinder (five sided cover) parts are interchangeable from any year to any year. tilt cylinder with port cast into side of housing (1992-1994) is not repairable.

Ahh, ok, I understand, trim and tilt, my tilt is fine and working a treat, and I know what tilt cylinder you are talking about.
But its the trim cover I need and you've comfirmed what Ive been told locally, the 5 sided cover is the same for all models inc Chrylser models... the search continues
