trim gauge driving me crazy

The "project" made it to the water.....One problem. I cannot get the trim gauge to work. The sender is brand new and reads 0-180 ohms on the meter so I know it is working, but when you plug it in the gauge it jumps from full down to full up within a slight range of movement of the meter. The gauge is not running comparable to the output of the sender.

The boat is a 98 searay 175 5series. It seems like the gauge and sender are not compatible. Makes no sense. I have messed with it too long. Has anyone got any ideas or run into this.

Thanks for any help...

Re: trim gauge driving me crazy

Trim senders can be a little tricky. loosen it up and with the drive all the way down, turn it back and forth slowly until it comes to full down on the gauge. At this time you will note either direction you turn the sender it will go up. they are not just one defined range like say a fuel sender. So if you go too far it will work backwards. If it dont go up with the drive, turn it the other way.

Just be patient.

I have gone through that...drive full down, line up the tabs on the sender etc. The issue is that the gauge sweeps right through the full range of motion when the sending unit moves only slightly. They are not proportional too each other. I was thinking there might be a wiring resistance problem....

I am not sure it will work:confused:, but you could try putting your meter (volt function) in series with your trim gauge and see if it responds the same way.

Mine is kind of like that too, dont much matter to me I adjust trim by "feel" and sound.
I wish my trim gauge was an oil pressure gauge but I'm not going to disturb a nice 30 year old gauge cluster that all match and work good.
brand new trim sender and limit here as well.
