Trim Gauge help

:confused:I think I have a bad trim gauge. I just finished replacing the trim sender and limit switches. I have checked all connections. I have tried to rotate the sender but nothing happens. When the key is off the gauge reads up and when turned on it goes to 1/4 from all the way down.

I have two what look like ground wires hanging under the lower unit should they be connected and what are they for?

Any help trouble shooting the gauge would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Trim Gauge help

What the gauge does when the key is OFF is totally irrelevant. They are an unsprung gauge and will wander all over the place without power, so we ignore them (you'll notice your tacho stays at the reading it was on when the key is turned OFF).

To test the gauge, turn the key ON and ground the Brn/wht wire on the back of the gauge. It should read full DOWN. Without a wire connected to the gauge SENDER terminal it should read full UP. If the gauge is good, and you've put new senders in then just a couple of things to check.

You have the correct sender connected to the gauge, yes? The starboard sender is for the gauge. The wires for both senders passes through the transom plates. The pair for the gauge connect to a pair of wires at the back of the engine, one Brn/wht and the other black. The other pair go to the trim pump.

Download the SERVICE MANUAL for your engine and have a look at page 4F-2

Re: Trim Gauge help

Anybody have any other ideas? I will be going out to work on the boat this weekend and want to have a few things to try out. Any help is appreciated. Thanks for the post.

What would you like to hear ???? I'll type it out for you if it will make you feel better.

When the ignition switch is off and no power to the gauges, don't worry about what it reads. It means nothing.

Anybody have any other ideas? ....

Was I wasting my time posting a reply for you? Do you want someone else to suggest something because doing what I suggest will involve a bit of work? Maybe the reason nobody else has given you a suggestion is because it would be the same as what I suggested.

Maybe you'd like the hear something like.... 'When the key is ON, just tap the gauge with you finger and it will miraculously repair itself and all the wrong wiring connection will disconnect themselves and reconnect in the right places.'

You may 'boat4fun', but maintaining that boat involves work...

Re: Trim Gauge help

Easy there guys....All I was looking for was any other suggestions of things I may check if that does not solve it so I don't waste my time driving out to the shed and trying to fix it.
