trim gauge questions

I have a 89 2.3L OMC. It has the trim sending unit on the out drive but no trim gauge was ever installed in the gauge cluster. How would I test the sending unit to see if it is any good, Can I use any trim gauge or does it have to be one for this particular sending unit.

Use your multi meter and check for a change in resistance while tilting.
Perhaps your local parts supplier can assist in the proper gauge.
