How hard is it to add a trim gauge? I have a merc 140 out of a 77 Apallo with matching outdrive (no serial #) going into a 67 22ft Islander and was wondering about a trim gauge. Would it be hard to add or not worth it at all? Thanks

Re: trim gauge

Adding a trim gauge requires adding the sending unit on the drive and the gauge at the helm. A single wire runs from the sender to the "S" terminal on the gauge. The gauge requires +12 volts (key on) on the "I" terminal and ground on the ground terminal. If the gauge has an internal light, the "L" terminal is wired to the NAV side of the NAV/ANC switch. Whether you actually need the gauge or not is up to you. Proper trim setting varies according to load so the guage is all but useless except to tell you whether the drive is up or down. There is no single trim setting that works for all loads and speeds.

Re: trim gauge

Thanks silver, the only reason that I was thinking of doing it was so that I would know for sure where the outdrive was. But it sounds kind of like a pain in the butt to do since I would have to add the sending unit to the outdrive. It is just something that I was tossing around and thought I would ask about it.

Re: trim gauge

Look at the drive -- perhaps it is already there.
