Got all my gauges wired on new Yamaha 2004 90 2S.
Left trim gauge for last. Teleflex has two Yamaha gauges a three wire and two wire gauge. Both have three posts on the gauges, The newer 2001+ gauges are supposed to be "two wire" I am confused by this as the 2004 Yamaha 90 2S has three wires to go to the gauge Color codes pink (send) Black ground and gray. The gray has 12 V on it. Is this the pre 2001 or after 2001 motor? Actually year model may have nothing to do with it..

hello
it goes by the amount of wires on the sender not the gauge. the 01 and up yammies use a two wire sender. the 04 90 uses a two wire sender. shoulda bought the yamaha gauges. :) .
look at the trim sender, you should only see two wires.

Rodbolt I had not bought gauges yet. Just a new hour meter I got the old Tach/ Volt Meter and new hour meter going. I was going to buy a Teleflex gauge and rig a harness but opted for the Yamaha .Today I called 2 Yamaha dealers I wanted a Yamaha trim gauge and harness. Both were out, One did not know if the harness was included, The second gave me a price for gauge and harness. I told them to order me one and gave my credit card #. They called me back in two minutes, they had some new gauges not in boxes that were from where customers had upgrade to digital gauges. I told them 2004 motor two wire. They had a gauge and found a harness. I drove 50 miles to the Chesapeake Bay to them . the gauge has a orange face its the pro gauge. However it would not match to the harness they had, Its got a round plug with 4 pins . Theres 4 wires Orange Pink Black and Gray. They told me to butt connect the Black Pink and Gray to the harness ..forget the orange. The part number is on the gauge on a tag its 6Y5 83670-01-00. The 6Y5 is the pro gauge series I know that the rest is a trim gauge but the 01-00 I dont know what year. The store closed at 5 Pm I got there about 4: 45, after leaving I wondered if this is a pre 2001 gauge or later. I think its a pre 2001 gauge for the 3 wire sender because of the orange wire . I understand there is a issue with voltage between the pre 2001 gauge and the current gauge. In that regard this gauge "may work" for a short time then ruin the sensor on the motor?? Or is it just the difference of the extra orange wire which I would cut off and seal.?? I was fully prepared to have them order the proper gauge at their retail cost. I can of course return this and let them know to order me the gauge I asked for. This gauge of course3 has also the yellow wire to the hot ing and the blue wire for the night light.

Re: Trim Gauges 2001 or Prior? 2-3 wire?

wont work. sorry
the two wire sensender uses a different method of operation than the three. on the 3 wire 5v is supplied on the orange wire the black is a ground and the pink is a pick off from the potentiomoeter(sender) on the two wire the sender is just a potentiometer. need a two wire gauge. the reason why the connectors are different is in 95 they changed all the plugs from round to square. the pre 95 gauges and harness's, with the exception of the main 10 pin harness plug, all were round. post 95 went to square, post 01 all trim senders were 2 wire, post 05 models use another wire mod for the alarm plug. its fun but it is what it is. nice thing the yamaha tach not only contains the visual alarm indicators but has a trim meter built in in. call Bill at B&T outboards, 251 232 3208 and tell him a guy in kitty hawk says he may have a deal. the pre 95 harness wont fiot the engine end either. its just to easy to buy the yamaha stuff and its all plug and play. no guessing not cutting no splicing just set the dip switches and play.

Thanks Rodbolt, I did consider that digital gauge, however its not cheap and I have seen trouble reports on them None of the Yamaha gauges are cheap. My dealer has ordered me a new Yamaha trim gauge 6Y5 83670 12 00. Its 143 dollars not cheap but its a really rugged looking gauge. (2 wire sender) Pro series. I will be good to go til my next "issue" comes about ..thanks for your help .. See my new post too about tools for OMC that can be used for Yamahas. Now two years ago this same dealer gave me a quote of 7000 dollars to rig a new Yamaha 90 with new controls and gauges. I figured I would save some money DIY, yes I have saved about 1150 dollars but it has taken some time and figuring it all out,,I would advise others unless you've got plenty of time and know the product well to let a dealer rig your new motor.

I think Bill sells the tach kit for around 200 or so.
usually the digital tach is about as trouble free as they come. most work for years. the key is to cover them from direct sunlight when not in use. and your right yam gauges and harness's are not cheap. neither are the ign switches.

Rodbolt , I got that new trim gauge and a used but good harness and it works like a champ. All systems are now go . I raised the motor one bolt hole up so its on the second hole down (1987 Boston Whaler 17 Montauk)Verified oil pump/rechecked timing at low speed/checked pickup linkages/carb linkages ect. I am good to go. Motor has 120 PSI compression exactly on all three cyl after warm up all plugs pulled and wide open throttle for test. Thats the same by the way that my old Evinrude had when new. It got about 14 hours now and I am going to stright gas. Thanks for all your advise you have truly helped me out here.
